This is a gallery of organizational graphics for the 19th Century and Pre-WW1 20th Century U.S. Military including any units roughly from 1800 to 1914.

National Guard / State Militia

Division, National Guard of California (30 June 1902)

Complete tactical structure of the California National Guard. Excludes the Adjutant-General's staff and the Naval Militia, which was spun off into its own organization that reported to the Commander-in-Chief (Governor) directly.

The lineage of the pictured infantry regiments are carried by:

  • 250th Air Defense Artillery (First California) as a result of conversion of the First California into Coast Artillery units in the 1900s

  • 159th Infantry (Fifth California) and 160th Infantry (Seventh California) as a result of World War I mobilization and renumbering at the national-level

  • 184th Infantry (Second California) as a result of the splitting off Central Valley/Norcal units (excluding the SF Bay Area) from the 159th and 160th in 1924

  • 185th Infantry (Sixth California) as a result of splitting off the Southern Central Valley units around Fresno/Bakersfield from the 184th in 1929.

First Division, National Guard of California (20 November 1867)

Complete tactical structure of the post-Civil War California National Guard. Excludes the Adjutant-General and his staff, how actually ranked lower (Brigadier-General) than the Commanding General of the First Division (Major-General)
