Swedish Lvkv 90 Air Defense Platoon Structure

The Lvkv 90 is a Swedish self-propelled anti-aircraft gun based on the CV9040. Lvkv Platoons provide battalion-level air defense within Mechanized Battalions, the Leopard 2/Strv 122 (soon to be Strv 123) and Strf 9040 (CV90) force. This was the platoon structure as of 2025, based on my conversations with an Lvkv operator.

Each Lvkv 90 is crewed by 7. The Vehicle Commander (including the Platoon Leader and Deputy) manages the vehicles maneuver and ground combat, while the Fire Controller (Eldledare) manages the air battle. Each vehicle has two gunners (one in reserve and also to load the clip-fed 40mm), a driver, and 2 operators for the PS 95 radar and LuLIS national air defense network.

I’m told they’re moving to Specialist Officers (essentially senior NCOs but a distinct personnel category) as the platoon leadership for Lvkv units due to its technical nature. However, commissioned officer platoon leaders still happens.

In 2010s and early 2020s doctrine, each battalion was allotted a platoon of 4 Lvkv 90s under an Lvkv Platoon within its Staff & Mortar Company. However, I’ve been told by multiple people that because of the planned expansion of the Swedish Army that Lvkv Platoons have recently been reduced to 3 vehicles. Compared to the 2010s, by 2030 the Swedish Army wants to grow from 2 non-permanent brigades to 3 permanent mechanized brigades and 1 infantry brigade, and from 5 mechanized battalions and 1 reduced Gotland Battle Group to 10 mechanized battalions (including a fully reinforced Gotland battalion). Sweden only has 30 Lvkv 90s total—3 of which are the Lvkv 90C modified for overseas operations. This means they had just enough to provide the 4-vehicle platoon plus spares pre-expansion, but have no wiggle room post-expansion.

For the 4-vehicle platoon just add a fourth Lvkv like Erik.
