Task Force 1-28 Infantry: The Last Permanent Light Infantry "Task Force"

Task Force 1-28 Infantry was a light infantry battalion task force from 2015 to 2020 under the 3rd Infantry Division. When it existed 1-28 IN was the only “organic” light infantry task force in the army. In this case, they use task force to refer to a reinforcement to the typical battalion structure and not a task organized unit, because the add-ons were organic to its MTOE and they shared the same regimental affiliation. It's not like a typical battalion task force, where the supporting artillery, engineers, and sustainment are all part of different parent regiments/battalions. The permanently organized task force is a bit oxymoronic if you ask me, but you'd have to be pretty dramatic to say it's the dumbest thing the Army ever did.
This is its configuration from around 2018 onward because they did a minor relettering of subunits. It was formed as a result of the inactivation of the 3rd Infantry Divisions’ 3rd Armored BCT and absorbed some of its personnel. 1-28 IN’s four infantry companies were the same as in any IBCT Infantry Battalion, but it also had a M119 105mm field artillery battery (initially battery F and then battery E), a two-platoon combat engineer company (initially company E and then company F), and an organic support company (company G). For a regular battalion the forward support company wouldn’t be organic. The HHC and support company were also much larger than a typical light infantry battalion’s, making for a 1050-1060 end strength versus the typical 646.
