WW2 German Unit TO&E/KStN

Archive > World War II > WW2 German Sources

This is the collection of World War II German TO&Es or Kriegsstärkenachweisungen (KStN), as well as other sources regarding force structure or unit equipment.

 KStN Rolls

These are archived links of NARA KStN records originally provided to Sturmpanzer.com by Joe Davis, but are now only accessible by Wayback Machine as far as I know. I am not taking credit for them but do want to make them easier to find for newcomers to TO&Es. You can also find them on the National Archives directly (T78 Rolls 381 to 397), although as far as I know they are displayed as 1,000 TIFFs instead of PDFs which makes them a pain. JC Calvin is also uploading microfilm rolls to his FTP server.

 Individual KStN

These are individual KStN excerpts, generally for company-sized units, which have been extracted from the full documents listed previously for quick reference. I don't intend to do this for many of them, just the ones that I've done this for while working on my own projects.

Freie Gliederung refers to an organizational change where company-level motor transport/supply was centralized in a battalion-level Supply Companies (Versorgungs-Kompanien or VersogKp) to economize motor vehicles. The location in the NARA rolls is given. (R = Roll, F = Beginning Frame)

 Other Documents

BArch RH 10/348 — Festlegung des Solls sowie Ausstattung mit Panzerschreck (Ofenrohr) und Panzerfaust (Faustpatrone) (Allgemeines) This correspondence relates to the issue of Panzerschrecks and Panzerfausts to Panzergrenadier units. Notably, how in the April 1944 KStNs they weren't meant to be issued any Panzerschrecks. This lacking AT capability was discussed, however, and they changed it so 3 Panzerschrecks and 18 Panzerfausts would be allotted per Panzergrenadier Company (among other units discussed).

KStN Re-Copies or Visualizations

  • WWII Day by the Day by Christoph Widmann-Awender. Undoubtedly the GOAT of visualizing KStNs. Basically any KStN you or I have access to remotely he has done it. The site is in German, but I think that is better anyway to avoid details getting lost in translation.

  • Bayonet Strength by Gary Kennedy. Bayonet Strength as of 2026 focuses mainly on infantry battalions. It has the added benefit of a narrative document in English per battalion type to explain the changes over time. Kennedy also has entries for American, British, and Soviet TO&Es.

  • Leo Niehorster. The other GOAT. Niehorster generally focuses on more high-level organizations, but does have some company-level KStN visualizations as well. He uses the period-accurate German military symbology to do it though so you'll probably need a few of his organizational symbols pages open (linked on the right most column of this index page) to cross reference.

  • MilitaryResearch.org. He has digitized KStN Nr. 111n, 131n, and 151n covering the Dec 1943/May 1944 German Infantry Battalion, but presented in the manner of a U.S. Army TO&E rather than a KStN.
