World War II U.S. Army Unit Organization Graphics

Graphics > American Orders of Battle > World War II U.S. Army (1939-1945)

This is a gallery of organizational graphics for U.S. Army Units Battalion-Sized and Larger during World War II, the immediate buildup following the German Invasion of Poland, and the immediate post-war years until 1948. In general pre-WWII graphics will only be shown if they were part of an ongoing reorganization to prepare for WWII. Graphics which are based on tables of organization and equipment (TO&Es), which are generic baselines that real units are manned and equipped by rather than the units themselves, will have the TO&E number and date listed.

Click to see the Interwar (1920-1940) and Post-WWII (1948-59) galleries. The Post-WWII gallery does not include the Pentomic Era which has its own gallery.

U.S. Army Infantry

U.S. Army Infantry Air-Borne Battalion (TO&E 7-45, 15 Sep 1941)

An experimental airlanding battalion (initially only involving landing by powered aircraft and later by glider) designed to test airlanding tactics and aircraft loading techniques. The two associated battalions (the 550th and 88th Infantry Air-Borne Battalions) were formed at about half-strength and were later converted into Glider Infantry outfits.
