North Korean Mechanized Rifle Platoon (1980/90s)

The following is the North Korean Mechanized Infantry Platoon organization based on American intelligence from the 1990s. As this draw heavily on western sources, it should be taken with a grain of salt. It should be noted that the ranks for each billet are assumed based on what is typical of the equivalent ranks in South Korea.

  • 6× Riflemen, presumably Soldier/Chŏnsa (OR-2) to Senior Soldier/Sanggŭp-pyŏngsa (OR-5), armed with 1 Type 86 (AKM/AKMS) rifle each

  • 1× Driver [A] , presumably Soldier/Chŏnsa (OR-2) to Senior Soldier/Sanggŭp-pyŏngsa (OR-5)

  • 1× Vehicle Gunner [A] , presumably Soldier/Chŏnsa (OR-2) to Senior Soldier/Sanggŭp-pyŏngsa (OR-5)

[A] It is assumed that each squad has an additional 2 vehicle crew (driver and gunner) attached to the vehicles that do not dismount. It is also assumed that the squad leader or platoon leader act as the vehicle commander for the vehicles they occupy. Each vehicle has enough room to seat the entire rifle squad, the platoon leader, and 2 additional vehicle crew.
